Soil testing in full swing for Chandigarh Metro project
Chandigarh: Giving momentum to the Metro project in Chandigarh, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) has taken a step forward.
The DMRC is doing geo-technical investigation for the Chandigarh Metro by collecting soil samples from various areas which fall on the proposed route, after which it will submit a Detailed Project Report (DPR).
The Planning Commission which did not approve the project earlier has now given the green signal to it considering the increased fuel prices.
Stating it an expensive project, the commission had earlier suggested Chandigarh Administration to improvise alternative transport arrangements.
In the first phase, the DMRC has examined the soil near Art College in Sector-10, Neelam Theatre in Sector 17, in Sector 16 and Matka Chowk.
It is to be noted that, the Chandigarh metro rail plan was proposed in 2008. The underground metro rail costs Rs 350 crore per km and the elevated metro rail’s cost has been estimated Rs 140 crore per km.
In the first phase, the 6.5-km metro line will be expanded from Housing Board Chowk to Sector -21.
The following 7 corridors have been suggested by RITES and has been given "in principle" approval by Urban Development Ministry
Corridor 1: Khuda Lahora — IT Park (16.31 km]
Corridor 2: Motor Market — Maheshpur (7.8 km]
Corridor 3: Sukhna Lake — S.A.S. Nagar Railway Station (16.86 km]
Corridor 4: Dakshin Marg — Airport
Corridor 5: IT-Park — S.A.S. Nagar Sector 105
Corridor 6: Dadu Majra — Mohali Sector 93
Corridor 7: Zirakpur — Panchkula Bus Terminal

Two routes for the Metro Rail were decided upon at a meeting held here on Thursday. With changes made in the alignment of its routes, one will now also pass through Aerocity in Mohali.
As part of the process to prepare the detailed project report, a discussion was held during the meeting to finalise the two routes and their terminal stations.
The first route will run from the north of the city to the south, starting from a site close to Capitol Complex near Secretariat, High Court and Rock Garden. It will reach Sector 17 Plaza through UT Secretariat on Jan Marg, Sector 22, 35, ISBT 43 and go to Mohali, where it will pass through Aerocity and City Centre to terminate at Sohana, after taking a turn near Sohana gurdwara.
The other route known as the East-West Corridor will start from Sector 21, Panchkula, and lead to the railway station in Chandigarh, crossing Sector 17 Plaza, PGI, Sarangpur, and reach Mullanpur.
The construction of depots for both these routes requires 25 acres of land each. Haryana has communicated that it has the required land available in Sector 21 of Panchkula. Punjab is offering two sites for the depots of both routes — one at Mullanpur and the other at Aerocity.
A detailed alignment will be decided specially to suit the future expansion plan of Chandigarh railway station. Respective nodal officers have to finalise the locations of proposed stations in their territory. Roughly, the elevated portion will have stations at every 1 kilometre, while the underground portion will have them at an average distance of 1.2 km.

CHANDIGARH: Keeping alive region's tube dream, Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana selected Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) to prepare a detailed project report .The three stakeholders also approved the comprehensive mobility plan (CMP) for mass rapid transit system (MRTS), a pre-requisite set by the ministry of urban development for funding most of the project.
"DMRC is probably the only agency capable of taking up such a project at present," said UT finance secretary Sanjay Kumar. Prepared by RITES, the CMP draws a broad outline of the project, extending Metro Rail to Panchkula in Haryana and Mohali in Punjab. Besides, passengers from catchment areas of the two states and Himachal Pradesh will also be ferried to the nearest Metro station. "At a coordination meeting chaired by UT administrator Gen (retd) SF Rodrigues, chief secretaries of Punjab and Haryana broadly agreed to the CMP. A deadline of four years has been set for implementation of the project," said Kumar.
RITES had extended Metro to Panchkula after much brainstorming, with the end-station there to be set up in Sector 21, linking it to Chandigarh's last stop at Housing Board Chowk in Manimajra. There will be five Metro corridors, including a 5-km-long stretch into Panchkula and another 12-km link for Mohali, connecting Sector 104 to Chandigarh's Sector 52. The other three corridors are Khuda Lahora-IT Park on Madhya Marg, Sector 1-ISBT 43-Sector 52 on the Himalaya Marg and Sector 26-Sector 38-Dadumajra covering Purva Marg and Vikas Marg.
Solutions to traffic congestion offered by RITES include a large network of medium-level mass transport system such as bus rapid transit (BRT) to cover areas beyond Metro network and overloaded corridors. Besides, there are provisions of land use adjustments, densification along mass transport corridors and commuter rail system up to Ambala, Pinjore-Kalka, Ludhiana and Baddi-Nalagarh.
